David and Goliath

David and Goliath is one of the best-known stories in the Bible. A small, teenage shepherd boy versus the giant, well-trained, and equipped professional soldier. It’s often portrayed as the greatest upset of all time. The underdog of underdogs won:).

The problem is David’s victory wasn’t an upset. The Lord God Almighty was on David’s side. No giant can stand against the great I AM. Goliath was the underdog, David the heavy favorite.

Today’s business world is filled with Goliaths that can still be felled by smaller foes. How? Through faith, a righteous cause, boldness, and following David’s tactics:

  1. David was offered the same type of weapons and armor carried by the giant, a professional soldier. They didn’t fit him. So he refused to use them.

  2. David didn’t fight in a manner the giant was well prepared to dominate.

  3. David knew what he did well...the guy could sling a stone. He stuck to what he did well.

  4. David was nimble; the giant was not.

Big corporations and companies have lots of armor (credit lines/ bank accounts/ volume/ lawyers) and weapons (employees/ locations/ sophisticated systems). They want to engage smaller businesses in close combat where they can win a battle of attrition. But they move slowly and one bad quarter can cause them to falter, badly.

Smaller businesses that stick to what they do well, that don’t try to utilize the tactics of larger companies, remain fearless, bold and most of all nimble, still topple giants today. While bigger businesses are calling internal meetings to form a task force to analyze an opportunity to send to legal and finance for review the smaller bold, nimble companies are spending their time going after the opportunity…ALL OUT.

Let your business be what it is great at. Focus your time and resources on slinging rocks. You too will realize the giant is a heavy underdog. Go win, take the land, and let your customers and employees enjoy the fruits of your victory.
